• Hawthorn Grill to morph into deli, breakfast spot: Didn't see this one coming. Hawthorn Grill had announced less than two months ago that it was becoming more casual — gone were the white tablecloths and some of the more time-consuming menu items — founder Candace Rinke announced Hawthorn Grill would take a hiatus and return as Sweet Prince Deli & Treat Co., a breakfast-and-lunch spot that will close at 4 p.m.
• MOD Pizza sets opening date for Englewood restaurant: I'll say it: the pizza wars continue to rage. The Seattle-based MOD Pizza will open a restaurant at 9196 N. Main St. (Ohio 48) with a special promotion on May 9, with a ribbon-cutting and grand opening planned for the following day, May 10. And a second location is in the works in Centerville.
• Former Dayton cop to open made-to-order doughnut shop: This story went over VERY well here in our newsroom, which is only a mile or two away from what will soon be the Dayton area's newest doughnut shop on Oakwood Avenue in Oakwood. And customers will be able to create their own doughnut to order, choosing the icing, sprinkles and drizzle. All under the watchful eye of the ex-Dayton cop who is co-founder of the place. What's not to like?
• Firehouse Subs cuts the ribbon on its Cornerstone of Centerville shop: Behind only the pizza-restaurant wars and perhaps the fried-chicken restaurant wars, the sub wars are also heating up again. The Cornerstone restaurant is the fourth in the Dayton area, and a fifth is gearing up to open in Englewood, to be followed by a sixth in Sidney — with more to come.
So if you’re a doughnut lover, a pizza lover, a breakfast-sandwich lover or a sub-sandwich lover, this is a great time to be alive!
