Hot Dayton firefighters, beer, music and more this weekend

The Hunks and Ladders Firefighter Combat Challenge will draw fun-loving, socially conscious and fit firefighters from across Ohio to The Greene Saturday, July 22.

The event begins at 3:30 p.m. The challenge includes an obstacle course with feats of strength, like pulling a 165-pound dummy 75 feet. But who does what better is not really the point.

Let’s be honest, there are few professions as smokin' hot as firefighting.

"It's more about showing off their muscles and hyping up the crowd and impressing the judges," said Jake Preston, an emergency recovery coordinator at Paul Davis, a recovery, reconstruction and restoration company and Hunks and Ladders sponsor.

The local firefighters will be competing for a spot in the 2017-2018 Hunks and Ladders calendar. "The calendar is another way for firefighters to give back to the community they proudly serve," said Preston.

All proceeds from the sale of the calendar will benefit the Miami Valley Firefighter/EMS Memorial, A Special Wish Foundation – Dayton Chapter and the Pink Ribbon Driven Foundation.

The second annual event is family-friendly and features not only the competition, but live band, food, beverages, vender booths and the Hunks and Ladders fire engine.

He said the day is all about raising awareness and funds for three deserving charities: A Special Wish Foundation Inc, Miami Valley Firefighter/EMS Memorial Association, and Pink Ribbon Driven.

"What we are looking for is guys who will sell calendars, come to the events and get into it," Preston added.

Judges -- this writer included -- will select the top 12 firefighters for this year's Hunks and Ladders calendar.

A champion will be belted.

The new Hunks and Ladders group picks up the charity firefighter calendar tradition that started in the 1980s and was an annual must-have until the calendar publication ceased in 2004.
